Perspective is an interesting thing. There may be one definite subject right in front of an audience, but perspectives differ from one person to another. The sheer difference inspires this series in how someone observe an ordinary thing through kaleidoscopic awe, which gives an extraordinary view versus something that lays in front of you, in plain foggy sight. So tell me,.. do you revel in colors or do you just see and settle in the monotones of real life?
If you have lived in a tropical country, the umbrella is one of the most undervalued item which most of us overlook and under appreciate in our lifestyles. If anything,
it is the tool to hold immense roles — shelter you from our absent but torrential rains, makeshift fortress against the angry heat as well as a reliable weapon against eave-teasers, because, it is still a problem these days. My personal favourite use of umbrella, especially off late is that it commands and “implements” social distancing at the click of the button and voila, you are in a safe distant. Our predecessors were doing the right thing with these simplistic but imaginative tool even from back in the ages. This painting is a reminiscent of my short refuge under a bus stop because I was that person who forgot my umbrella on a rainy day. Against the nagging windy blues of the rains, I was envious of the kaleidoscopic canopies sheltering the lucky ones to go about their days. Unlike me, these lucky ones need not have to cancel engagements due to bad weather, or be stupidly late for a meeting soaked from head to toe. That day when I got home, I picked the most colourful umbrella from my mom’s collection and hoped that when there was a need for it, mine would stand out in the crowds of umbrellas for an onlooker like me, that day.
I wish I had a quirky story symbolising an umbrella with relationships like that famous song but honestly, there is no better demonstration of an automatic social distancing unfolding with a simple swift of the umbrella despite rain or shine.

Of the sensual oceanic blues and rhythmic waves, what more can you ask for when you let your mind drift to the dreams of the open ocean? As an artist, I have always believed that your surroundings are your biggest source of inspiration. But of course, it is easier said than done. However, there is something magical when these idyllic prompts strike your strokes— because when you start, you cannot put down your brush. I was transported to a recent tropical escape and I remember feeling calm. The blues and teals of the sea and sky were teasing companies but then something occurs when nature decides to shake the serenity down with Her temperament. I saw a small boat across the horizon fighting against turbulent waves that was in a brawl against the thunder and the vicious wind. For a split second, it almost seemed exceptionally breathtaking to witness all these elements coming in tune as do melodies when composing a song. I felt scared, worried but also enraptured by the sheer spectacle before me. Like most good things in life, one must adjourn, as if nothing happened. This piece you see before you is a mental snapshot of what I felt was a pinnacle of that aforementioned show I was fortunate enough to witness. It is almost a poetic reminder to always keep your chin and head high in times of turbulence and always remember to go against the the “tides” because when you reach the end of it, it is a picturesque sight.
